Is there really something special going on in Tamarindo? Take the case of a local businessman known as Ted “stop working so damn hard” Horwitz. Why did he give up a perfectly lucrative career in San Francisco just to move to the beach in Tamarindo Costa Rica?

His story began a few years ago while he was on his first trip to the beach at Playa Tamarindo Costa Rica. Ted and a buddy came down for a few weeks to surf and hang out. They were amazed that there were so many classic FJ40 Toyota Land Cruisers still being driven around. So when Ted finally quit his corporate life and made the big move, first thing he did was to buy him one of these classic jeeps. He drove his new baby everywhere and was continually blown away by the stunning beauty of the Costa Rican backcountry. Many a time he shifted
into 4x4 and found hidden waterfalls and swimming holes, fantastic hiking, hidden beach coves, and cool little Tico towns. He’d get a flat and decide to sleep in the back of the jeep and wait till morning to fix it. Nights were balmy and he loved listening to the sounds of the jungle.

Ted figured that after more than 20 years of working in cubicles, catching flights and making PowerPoint presentations that this is what he wanted to do. So he quit his Costa Rican real estate job, took the rest of his savings and bought and restored a bunch of these fantastic jeeps. He found some like-minded crazies (a mixed bunch of Costa Ricans, Nicaraguans, Colombians and a Russian), rented an office and held his breath to see if anyone else would love the off road experience as much as he and his cohorts did.

They do. The business has exploded. Since May of 2006, Ted’s has had hundreds and hundreds of customers. Families, groups of travelers, students, an 83 year old guy (our friend, Lester!) and his 75 year old wife, Americans, Canadians, Spaniards, Italians, Austrians, etc The combination of great Tamarindo Costa Rica off-road driving, jungle exploration, great guides and beautiful beaches seem to have hit a nerve.
